-Subjective Beauty Exercise (due emailed to me by Sunday night at 9pm):  Write a page (it can be a scene, a poem, a short-short story--anything you like) where a character has a nontraditional view of beauty in some area of life: whether they appreciate architecture most wouldn't think is "beautiful," see the beauty in something unusual (like Frida Kahlo loved the unibrow! or perhaps a nurse in a battlefield tent sees a piece of bloody gauze whose stain reminds her of a blooming flower), or appreciate unusual things out of love (like a new mother thinking a spit-up stain on her shirt is beautiful). This can be in first, second, or third person (though realize, if it's in second person, this "character" will be the reader).

Friday 7/15:
-post Blog Assignment #5
-finish Portfolio Assignment #2 and Subjective Beauty Exercise

Monday 7/18:
-Post Blog Assignment #6
-begin Portfolio Assignment #3 (Due on Wednesday)
Portfolio Assignment #3 is based on a real-life project called Significant Objects that plays with the concepts of art and assigned value. In class, you will pick an object from a row of objects and it is your job to make the object significant by writing a story or poem that features it. We will read examples of authors' stories and the objects that inspired them in class.
-begin Portfolio Assignment #4 (Due on Thursday)
Portfolio Assignment #4 is an imitation exercise. Read at LEAST ten pages of your favorite author (or one of your favorite authors), and make a list of stylistic things the author does. It may help to see to what extent the author does the following, or what choices s/he makes with these style devices: minimalism/maximalism, repetition, unusual punctuation, point of view, past/present/future tense, vocabulary, subject matter. After you've made a list of what you might be able to imitate, try writing a story or poem or essay using these same techniques. Your assignment should include (at the top of your assignment or on a separate piece of paper) the name of the author and your list of techniques that s/he utilizes in the piece of writing you used to get inspired--try to have at least 4 items on your list.
