The aroma of muffins fills the cool air inside the bakery. My shoes squeak against the newly polished blue checkered floor. The walls are a soft pink that remind me of the sky when the sun sets behind the dark mountains in the distance. "Good afternoon," the baker says with an open grin. I smile and press my nose against the glass of the dessert display. Excitement fills within me as I see the fresh baked treats resting on baby blue lace and shiny white plates. "Our newest additions to our fine assortment of baked goods include our lemon iced..." explains the baker, but I zone out of the world as he continues talking. All I can think about is the hunger in my stomach, the delicacies in front of me, and my empty pockets. A lemon cake sliced into a wedge is the one I want most. The mini chocolate chips and thick cream cheese icing taunt me behind the glass. The icing swirls to the middle of the cake where it fades from creamy white to a light pink. On the side of the plate is a plump strawberry covered all the way to the top in a thick milk chocolate shell. Unfortunately, I can not afford any of the cakes, muffins or scones, and the lemon cake happens to be the most expensive. "Child, you seem sad," the baker whispers.
“I should not waste any more of your time, sir. I don't have any money, and I should head home now," I answer.
“I see you have your eye on my lemon iced cake," he says. I drop my gaze. "Little girl,” he sighs, “You may have it if you promise me you will enjoy it down to the very last bite."
"But it is the most expensive dessert-"
“For you, it is free," he interrupts. He places the cake in front of me and hands me a fork. I take it and walk to a table. My body sinks into the comfortable cushioned chair, and I lift my fork. I scoop up a piece with lots of chocolate chips and lead it to my mouth. As the moist cake touches my lips, I close my eyes and concentrate on the beautifully contrasting flavors of chocolate, lemon, and strawberry. I sigh with joy, and I know I will keep my promise with the baker. I enjoy the cake for every second down to the very last bite.
