Artistic Statement

In writing a story I look for two things: the fulfillment for the reader and the fulfillment for myself. The latter is why I enjoy creative writing in its multiple forms. Personally, I prefer writing short stories or novellas as well as the occasional screenplay. My favorite elements of writing are dialogue and setting description, both of which are the main parts of a screenplay. Short stories allow a plot to be long enough to be interesting without boring the reader. Together these two styles of creative writing allow me to be descriptive and use witty dialogue or delve deep into character development.
As a general rule my writing pieces tend to have a sarcastic internal monologue running throughout. This is partly to add humor to many of my stories which have darker themes and situations as well as to make it more enjoyable for the reader. My process in writing is similar. I take an idea whether dark, humorous, realistic, or otherwise, and add a bit of a sarcastic spin on it that still keeps the main elements of the idea. Then I jump right into writing the story, editing and revising where I see fit until the end, at which point I read it all over again and begin my next draft.
Inspiration comes in many different forms for me. Often it strikes randomly which demands that I carry a notebook or at the very least a scrap of paper with me at all times. Sometimes it can be a quirky image or a photograph that shows something unique. Maybe it's even a beautifully worded sentence that sparks one or even multiple ideas. This idea leads to another, which leads to another, and another… Until, that is, it all ends in a single, wonderful story.
